Family mentor
Your childcare experience could be a lifeline for a family. Join our team of dedicated volunteer family support mentors.
It’s about supporting families when they need it most.
With your knowledge and experience as a mum, dad, grandparent or carer, you could be the vital support a family needs and make a big difference to their lives.
Some of our families may be dealing with a variety of difficulties including post-natal depression, isolation, physical and mental health problems, bereavement, financial worries or relationship difficulties. Your role will be to support them in the way that they want; this may include practical tasks such as getting out of the house, getting to appointments or helping to get organised. It could also involve offering advice and sharing experiences or supporting parents through emotional issues.

A quick guide to becoming a Volunteer Family Mentor
We believe our volunteers deserve the very best support from the moment they join us. That’s why you’ll always have a dedicated staff member by your side, cheering you on and guiding you throughout your journey. You’ll also benefit from:
- Regular support and supervision sessions where you can share experiences and feel encouraged
- Ongoing training opportunities, both in person and through our easy-to-use e-learning platform, to help you grow in confidence and skills
- Reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses, so volunteering is accessible to everyone
Requirements of the role
Our Volunteer Family Mentors are required to:
- Join our free Volunteer Induction Training, which includes two in-person sessions and an online learning module. You’ll receive full support every step of the way
- Provide names of two referees (friends or colleagues who know you well) and undertake an enhanced criminal records check
- Have a non-judgmental attitude and understand the pressures of bringing up a family.
- Commit to volunteering a few hours a week for a minimum of six months. Obviously, we understand you may have holidays or other commitments during your time with us!
