St Albans Pancake Festival

St Albans Pancake Festival

For the fifth year Home-Start Herts are organising and running the prestigious annual “St Albans pancake race”, in conjunction with the events company and business publication Herts Business Independent. This community fundraising event will help Home-Start Herts meet the increasing needs of local families struggling to cope with day to day life.

The pancake races are a long running tradition in St Albans and this year is the 22nd anniversary of the flipping running race; the walking race was introduced some years after. Local businesses, organisations and charities enter teams for the races and compete for the prestigious title of flipping winners. With around 300 spectators gathering to watch the races and cheer the teams on, the atmosphere is tense and exciting.

“One of the great things about the St Albans pancake races is that everyone can get involved whatever their ability. We had two fabulous teams from Trestle Theatre and Trinity Project, charities that support adults with additional needs. Their team members really enjoyed being part of the races and came joint second in their heats. This event is all about bringing our community together and really highlights just what a fantastic community it is Home-Start Herts are so proud to be organisers of this event !” Suzy Moody, CEO

The impact of the pandemic has had a noticeably detrimental effect on families who had babies & were taking care of young children during lockdown; now they are struggling developmentally due to a lack of interaction during the early stages of their lives. There has also been an increase in domestic violence and the need to escape abusive relationships; also having a detrimental effect on the babies and children involved. Our volunteers build trusted and non-judgemental relationships and support the individual needs of the family in a way that no other service does.

Fundraising is vital to Home-Start’s future survival and the Pancake Race is a great way for you to show your support for the local community.
